Do You Know a Local Sporting Champion?
Australia has a great sporting tradition. From Don Bradman to Cathy Freeman Australia has hosted some of the worlds greatest sports men and women who began their sporting careers as youngsters in backyards and on school ovals. Not to be forgotten is the camaraderie of team sports and the community spirit of umpires and referees that volunteer every week to ensure that sporting events run smoothly.
Local Sporting Champion Grants were created to help young people reach their sporting ambitions by assisting with competition expenses such as travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment. The grants are open to individual or team athletes, coaches, umpires or referees aged 12-18 years who participate in sporting competitions at state or national level.

Young people who are participating at state or national championships traveling over 250 kilometres must submit their applications prior to the commencement of the competition to be eligible for consideration. Individuals are eligible for a $500 grant with teams eligible for a grant of $3000.
To assist me in awarding these grants I have created a panel of some of the Gold Coast's most respected sports representatives including, the head of a local professional sports institution, an Olympic medalist and the Physical Education Head of Department at a local State High School. The grants are awarded to the successful applicants on the advice of this panel three times per year.
